I wrote the theory portion of a National Science Foundation grant proposal that got funded I was a Ph. This book is a helpful reminder as to how to write effectively and persuasively in a Science context. I can't say enough good things about this book. It is easily one of the most useful and valuable books that any scientist or academic could read. Off the top of my head, writing science research papers, I can only think of The Craft of Research as comparable.
Schimel examines the craft of writing like a molecular biologist, addressing both the component units sentence, paragraph, sectionwriting science research papers, and like a novelist, discussing the overall arc and purpose of your writing. It is barely pages long, writing science research papers remarkably comprehensive. It helps that the book draws heavily upon two books that I love: Joseph Williams' book on Style, and the Heath writing science research papers book Make It Stick.
Two outstanding choices. What makes the book so useful is that Schimel doesn't just tell you what to do: he shows you. The worked examples, and the writing science research papers on what makes the example good science writing, is just superb. It also helps that Schimel distinguishes between writing about research that you have already done, and writing about research that you hope to do. So this book is useful for grant writers and report writers. What makes the book so valuable is that Schimel a good deal of time dealing with one of the main challenges for beginning researchers: identifying and articulating exactly what it is you hope to learn from the proposed research.
Chapter Writing science research papers for the Public, where Schimel discusses the "message box", is worth the price of the book alone. Quite simply, this book should be handed out to every student in the natural and social sciences, the day they start school. I love the fact that this book is about principles, not about rules.
I bought paper copies for my students, but I also read it myself on my Kindle. I have written science for more than twenty years, and I think I do fine, but I still learned something from this book. It teaches how to write science as a story that readers get engrossed in and will remember. There is an arc of opening-challenge-action-resolution in a good paper or proposal, and the same or a similar arc is replicated at the chapter, paragraph, and sentence level.
The book has examples of good and bad prose and structure, and these are usefully discussed and analyzed. Most of the examples come from environmental studies, the author's field of expertise, but this is not a problem if you work in a different field as I doas the examples are well chosen with a broad readership in mind.
Writing well is hard, but there is no way around it if you are in science. It can also be very rewarding to see the final product, writing science research papers, and even more satisfying to see the difference between first and last draft, so keep intermediate versions around. This book motivates you and guides you through this necessary struggle. You can actually read the book cover to cover, in contrast with rule-based books, and it's pleasant reading.
This is a practical guide that explains what good scientific writing is and how to do it. It fills a gap between books like Zinsser's On Writing Well, which in my opinion is overly general and so heavy on narrative that it can be hard to extract the good advice, and writing science research papers about the nuts and bolts of manuscript preparation.
Schimel's key insight is that good scientific writing is storytelling and that your papers and proposals can open and unfold in ways that readers find interesting--even exciting, writing science research papers. Doing this does not require you to sacrifice rigor or credibility. Schimel explains how to think about your paper as a story, what the required elements of a good story are, writing science research papers, and how these elements map to traditional formats like IMRAD.
This book could serve as the assigned text in a first-year graduate course on scientific writing. Every graduate student in the sciences should read it, and I suspect post-doctoral fellows and faculty would benefit from reading and even re-reading it.
This book is a complete guide to writing research paper as a story that can attract readers. I've tried other books about the same subject, writing science research papers, but couldn't find any one that can be practically applied. For designing sentences, paragraphs and sections, this book provides with sound principles and practical examples.
